Tatul 2011
TATUL
TATUL and the TOMB of ORPHEUS in 2011
TATUL the ancient church,
Tatul the sacred Pagan Sanctuary,
Tatul the ancient fortress
and Tatul the TOMB of ORPHEUS in 2011
With its ancient tombs temple holy well and staircases dating from the 4th, 3rd and 2nd century BC, Tatul, historically, has been quite a busy sacred place!
Again it was time to take a visit to
Tatul to view the updated ancient historic site
see what changes the EU and local Bulgarian funding has made there
and most of all
because I purrrrsonally love going there!
Tatul is situated near to Momchilgrad in southern Bulgaria.
Part of the changes i first noticed on my arrival at Tatul, was this new pay booth!
There were three prices listed there
3 leva entry per person, 10 leva entry for a group and a special price for students.
We paid our money
and entered
throo the newly concreted pathway leading to this ancient fortress.
Tatul was originally a Pagan sanctuary then became the remains of an ancient fortress.
In this photo on the right, you can see how some of the destroyed fortress walls have been resurected by the teams of archaeologists working on restoring this holy sanctuary to its former glory.
Tatul is not visited by hoards of people and this leaves the grass to grow greener on the ancient staircases!
Tatul was once also a church which was completely destroyed.
I noticed some major reconstruction to the walls with some brand new modern cementing going on between the ‘lines’ too!
You can clearly see that most of the fortress walls were dry wall and the new modern walls have concrete filler to keep the stones in place.
Tatul has two tombs both dug into one huge chunk of rock
The sacred place of Tatul is deemed by some archaeologists, but not all, to be the tomb dedicated to the Cult of Orpheus
Today in 2011,
you can clearly see
the tombs
The ancient stairs
and walls
of this superb
ancient temple
Some of the existing walls are from the 4th and 3rd century BC
The Temple or Mausoleum has also been dated from the 4th – 3rd century BC
Currently you can still climb the ancient steps up to the Tomb Grave
that was carved in the rock and dated to the 2nd century BC
You can still peer into the Holy Well, again this Holy well has been dated to the 2nd century BC
Even some really ancient staircases still exist!
Howevers,
the last time I visited Tatul,
I climbed the east staircase,
dated from
the 4th-3rd century BC,
it has now been blocked off for protection of the ancient staircase plus of course for risk of personal injury
I am about to upload some more photos taken in 2011 at Tatul, you can find the link at the top right of this page.
Thanks for visiting my photos of Tatul a Bulgarian site worthy of a visit
